Future Money: From Design to Economics

ETH Risk Center Workshop
Thursday and Friday, 3 and 4 September 2020

Due to changing preferences and technological innovations, long-established forms of money lose their appeal. Various countries experience a decline in the usage of cash, and digital currencies meet increasing attention. The current monetary architecture is exposed to fundamental challenges and may require extensive changes.

Starting with an analysis of the existing monetary architecture with its predominant role of cash and bank deposits, we explore potential developments by examining the economic and technical foundations of digital currencies, both publicly and privately issued, and discuss their regulatory implications.
